Az's World Of Warcraft Name Generators
Here are the name generators. I collected the data for them ages ago; basically what I did was take all the NPC names from the game (at the time. I haven't done anything from Northrend yet...) divided them up by race and gender and then cut the names up into their component syllables. The generators put those syllables together randomly into names. I included last names because you never know, someone might want to use a last name as their in-game name. I think it sounds good in some cases, especially Taurens. It is possible for the generator to generate existing NPC names (though rather unlikely to get the whole name the same!) and it is possible that they might generate something naughty, so if you're really sensitive, just don't use them :P (I take no responsibility if it does generate something naughty and you get in trouble for using it).
And last but not least, the...
Some random things that might be interesting to nerds like me:
- The code I used to make these name generators came from Seventh Sanctum. There are a lot of other great generators there too.
- A lot of weird NPC names are jokes or references to real life things or people... I've included syllables from those names in here as well, so long as they wouldn't make the results look *too* weird.
- There seems to be some weird gender disparity between the races. The elven races tend to be pretty even when it comes to male/female ratio, but in every other race there seem to be a lot more males. Dwarf females are especially outnumbered o.O
- Draenei don't have last names. Well, there are 4 Draenei NPCs with last names, but they either seem to be adoptions of orcish names or references to real life figures (Oprah Winfrey and Marcus Aurellius to be specific). Trolls don't have too many last names either, but I thought there was enough to include in the generators.
- There seem to be dialects, at least among the last names. Some are more common in some areas than others. Damned if I'm actually going to sort that out though, so they're all mixed together in the generator :P
- Also, there seem to be a lot of NPCs in areas that are related. Or at least they have the same surname.
- Some name elements seem to be incredibly common in certain races. Elves seem to like "moon". Taurens are partial to "hoof".
- One of the reasons the gnome names sound so weird is that there really aren't that many gnomes to mine names from. That and their names just sound weird anyways.
- The human name generators took the most work for probably the worst results. It really likes to generate english words, which while sometimes amusing (False Ravenrose, Garlic Bookey...) is not very useful. There are so many "real world" names from so many different cultures in the NPC names and I have no desire to sort them all out and make something coherent, so a lot of it sounds pretty silly...
